Berlin Phantasmagoria [2010]

Drifting “A Berlin Chronicle” is neither traditional chronicle, nor autobiography. Benjamin is quite clear on the fact that personal recollections do not necessarily result in an autobiographical presentation, and the chronicling Benjamin undertakes here pays no heed to chronological progression. So what then is “A Berlin Chronicle?” Essentially composed as a series of ‘snapshots,’ “A Berlin Chronicle,” in its very form, mimics the fragmentary experience of moving through the city as well as the act of remembrance. Further, in choosing the trope of the snapshot, Benjamin immediately sets up a tension between image and text, using and fusing their properties and limitations to draw attention to the very act of representation itself and the distortions that occur through mediation.
